Leaking or jammed disposal: stop the power first
Water under the sink next to an electric motor is a hazard, and a jammed blade can injure a hand. Our 24/7 line can walk you through the safe steps while you wait for a visit.
- Never put your hand or any tool inside the grinding chamber, even if the unit seems off.
- Turn the disposal wall switch off, then switch off its breaker at the panel.
- Unplug the unit if it uses a cord under the sink, only if the cabinet floor is dry.
- Close the sink's water supply stops if water is running into the cabinet.
- Place a pan under the leak and call (855) 575-2890.
What your disposal is doing, and what it usually means
The sound and the leak location narrow it down quickly.
Humming but not turning
The motor has power but the blades are stuck. A bone, fruit pit or cap can jam it. Do not keep flipping the switch.
Silence when switched on
No hum and no spin can mean a tripped reset, a dead motor or a power problem. Check the red reset button on the bottom.
Leaking from the bottom
Water from the housing or the reset button area usually means the internal seal has failed. That is typically the end of the unit.
Leaking at the top or sides
The flange, drain gasket or sink connection may be loose. Those are repairable.
Slow drain or gurgling
Grease and food residue clog the trap or drain arm. The disposal itself may be fine.

Repair or replace: an honest look
Disposals are mid-priced appliances, and a bad one is rarely worth a big repair.
| Problem | Repair makes sense | Replace makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Jam | Freed with the hex key at the bottom, motor still spins | Motor burned out after repeated jams |
| Leak at drain flange | Reseat the sink flange and gasket | Corroded or cracked housing |
| Leak from the bottom | Rarely repairable | Almost always replace |
| Dead unit | Tripped reset or a bad cord or switch | Seized motor on an old unit |
| Smell or slow drain | Clean the trap and drain arm | A worn grinder that no longer breaks up waste |
Most disposals last years of normal use. If yours is old, noisy and leaking, a new unit is usually cheaper than a repair that fails again.
Jams, hums and what is safe to try
Most jams free up with the manual wrench slot on the underside of the unit. With the power off, turn it back and forth until the blades move. Then press the reset button and test it with cold water running.
Do not use chemical drain cleaner in a jammed disposal. It sits in the chamber and can splash when a plumber opens it. If a few minutes with the wrench does not free the blades, call us.
The dishwasher line and the sink drain
A disposal has a knockout plug that must be removed before the dishwasher drain hose connects. If someone forgot, the dishwasher will back up into the sink. If we reconnect a hose, we also check the high loop or air gap that keeps dirty water from running back.
When a dishwasher leaves standing water and the sink also drains slowly, the line beyond the trap may be partly blocked. In that case our drain cleaning service clears the kitchen line.
Hard water and the desert kitchen
Marana Water's published figures range from roughly 3 to 14 grains per gallon depending on the neighborhood, and the Town says it poses no health risk. Scale does build up on seals, the drain flange and the inside of the housing, and mineral crust can make the grinder rough.
Cold water running during use helps flush waste and keeps grease from coating the pipe. Run the unit and flush with water for a few seconds after each use.
Installing a new disposal
Replacement is usually a same-visit job when the sink and mounting ring are sound.
- 1
Power and water off
We switch off the breaker and close the sink stops, then disconnect the drain and dishwasher hoses.
- 2
Remove the old unit
We release the mounting ring, lower the unit and check the sink flange for cracks.
- 3
Mount and connect
The new disposal is mounted, the electrical connection is made safely and the drain parts are reconnected.
- 4
Test
We run water, check every joint for drips and confirm the dishwasher drains properly.
Calls in Picture Rocks and nearby
We handle disposal repair across Marana and in the Picture Rocks area, where harder water means seals and flanges may scale faster. Tell us your address when you call. The drain connection under a disposal and dishwasher is part of what the 2024 International Plumbing Code (IPC), adopted in Marana with local amendments, addresses, so a leak at the trap or air gap is worth a proper repair.
What drives the cost of disposal work
The cost depends on whether the unit can be saved and how much connecting it takes.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Our emergency line is open 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays. Switch off the power at the breaker and call (855) 575-2890.
No. Never put a hand or tool inside, even when the power is off. Use the hex wrench at the bottom or call us.
Usually not. A leak from the bottom of the housing means the internal seal has failed, and the unit is normally replaced.
Dishwashers drain through the disposal or a branch tailpiece. If the sink fills when the dishwasher runs, the knockout plug or the line may be blocked.
Scale builds up on seals and gaskets in Marana's hard water, which can lead to leaks sooner. It is a wear factor, not a cause of sudden failure.
Often yes when the sink and mounting ring are in good shape. Same-day appointments are offered when available.
